We are so excited that April is nearly here, Spring is our favourite time at Wild Finca. This is now our fourth year of showing people around Wild Finca. Last week we welcomed over 30 students from the University of Oviedo, from the Biology course. They come as part of the Applied Zoology module, to see what we are doing here at Wild Finca. We’re looking forward to hopefully partnering more on some field work based at Wild Finca. The University of Oviedo students being guided by Luke, Roan...

Dear Wild Finca Community, Spring is most definitely in the air here at Wild Finca (even if the distant Picos are covered in snow!) We now have three Grasshopper Warblers across the land, and the other day whilst walking a horse I (Katie) nearly walked straight into a Short-toed Eagle, hovering above our field in search of snakes. I might be exaggerating a bit but it really did feel very close! And did you hear about our badgers?!? We went to check the camera at the cave the other day only to...

Dear Wild Finca Community, Thank you to everyone who reached out regarding our Genet camera trap footage at Wild Finca! Having Genets at Wild Finca is particularly exciting for us, as Luke and I were incredibly fortunate to see our first Genet's in Zambia, which was where we first met. I (Katie) was managing a bushcamp and Luke had been hired as the in-house cameraman for a lodge in the Luangwa Valley. During our respective time there we both got to know the Genet rather well, a curious...

Dear Wild Finca Community,It's been all go at Wild Finca recently! Last week, Luke and our volunteer Jolyon created five new ponds, with Ro and Albs joining in over the weekend to complete the last one. We eagerly anticipate the wildlife these ponds will attract. And we've had some fabulous activity across our camera traps. Down at the Wild Finca cave we've had boar, foxes and Genets regularly passing through the area, but most exciting, was the visit from a chuntering large male badger. Over...

Dear Wild Finca Commmunity, We hope you had a wonderful weekend! We spent much of it in the veg patch preparing the beds for planting season. Sunday morning, we headed, as per usual, to the local market town, and for the first time in weeks, our otter friends were nowhere to be seen. A friend spotted them upriver earlier in the week, and it is quite typical behavior that they would have moved on by now to new fishing grounds. We did see a couple of trout, a good indicator that the otters had...

Dear Wild Finca Community,Yesterday, both boys were off with suspected Scarlet Fever, but as Roan literally said when asked to rest, ‘What is rest?!?’ and I (Katie) was fire fighting some serious wrestling in the house, I decided it was time for some much needed fresh air. And so, after a bit of a delay (we are in the midst of buliding and a building site is quite the catnip to the kiddos) we made it to the woods. The woods for us are a tonic, every time we enter there is a shift in all of...

Dear Wild Finca Community, We had some sad news over the weekend…we learnt that our resident Barn Owl had been predated. First indication was a large white patch below his box, and on arrival to the site we realised that the white was an explosion of feathers. All signs led to us determining that the predator would have been avian (all feathers had been plucked, not chewed like a fox or badger might do). Most likely an Eagle Owl (who we heard calling all Winter in the woods below us) or a...
