Calves, ducklings & summer magic at Wild Finca

Cherry finally gave birth, storms may be messing with our ducklings, and the Nightjars are still singing. Plus: a family-friendly quest to connect with nature, wherever you are.

Dear Reader,

We hope you’re all doing well! We’ve just come through the recent European heatwave and are very grateful for the return of cool breezes and rain here in Asturias. After a sweaty week of 30+ degrees, both the land (and us) are finally breathing again. Thankfully, wild swimming has kept us sane, and Katie is still going strong with her daily dips - now on day 14 of her daily mission!

If you're part of Inside Wild Finca, you’ll have seen updates on our latest grazing plans, and how the dry heat threw a spanner in the works. But with the animals now moved on and the rains starting to return, we’re hopeful for a fresh burst of green.

Cherry’s a mum!
Exciting news - our youngest cow, Cherry, gave birth on Monday night! We were very much the expectant parents… her full udders had us guessing for weeks and we were starting to worry - but all is well.
The little one will have a few peaceful weeks to settle in before we tag her… and yes, a naming vote is coming your way soon!

Fluffy arrivals in the flock
We’ve had some much-needed new life among the ducks. It’s been a tough couple of years - between foxes, goshawks, and old age, our flock had dwindled. Ducks are such a key part of Wild Finca: not just for their eggs, but as our organic slug and snail patrol in the Food Forest and veg beds.

We were hoping for more - we set 20 eggs between our incubator and a few broody hens, but only 8 ducklings hatched. Chatting to local friends, they all said the same thing: storms! Apparently, electrical storms can disrupt incubation. We’d never heard that before - have you?

🦉 Wild sightings lately

  • The Nightjars are still going strong - one even woke us at 4am, churring just outside the bedroom window. Hopefully catching a few mozzies between songs.
  • Wasps have set up home on both sides of the house - exciting news, as they’ve been rare here until recently.
  • Still no full sighting of the Eagle Owls, but the Carrion Crows are making a racket at dusk along the cliffs - a good sign the owls are still around.
  • And the Honey Buzzards have been putting on a show, with their amazing wing-clapping displays over the woods - one of our favourite summer sounds.

As we head into the thick of summer, we’re hoping for more rain and for our little patch of “green Spain” to stay lush and thriving.

I looked out the window to see Albus with his hands in the cement mixer... Dear @ReaderWe hope your week’s been wild - in the best possible way - and that you haven’t melted entirely. It’s scorching here, and most of the Wild Finca crew have kept up the daily wild swims. We’ve needed to. The other day, Luke went to a school meeting and - completely out of the blue - our boys were held up as the example of what summer should look like: climbing trees, running free, independent, wild. Idyllic,...

Plus a 3-day nature connection adventure is coming soon - want in? Dear Reader, We hope you’ve had a wild week! Our boys broke up for the summer holidays on Friday, and we headed straight to the river to celebrate. Since then, we’ve managed a wild swim every single day - Saturday was the sea, Sunday and Monday brought us to different river spots. It got us thinking: why not make it a challenge? So, we’ve decided to try and swim every full day we’re home this summer holiday. We’ll keep you...

Dear Wild Finca Community, We hope you had a wonderfully wild weekend! Ours certainly was… We’ve just had a magical visit from our dear friends Penny and Dave Green, brilliant ecologists and the duo behind Lughurst Ecology. They were in northern Spain for a holiday before heading to us, and together we dove into all kinds of bio-blitzing here at Wild Finca. Some of you may recognise Penny from her days as Head Ecologist at the Knepp Project (where the seeds of Wild Finca were first sown for...
