Plus a 3-day nature connection adventure is coming soon - want in? Dear Reader, We hope you’ve had a wild week! Our boys broke up for the summer holidays on Friday, and we headed straight to the river to celebrate. Since then, we’ve managed a wild swim every single day - Saturday was the sea, Sunday and Monday brought us to different river spots. It got us thinking: why not make it a challenge? So, we’ve decided to try and swim every full day we’re home this summer holiday. We’ll keep you updated on how we get on! 🌿 A Wild Loop AdventureOn Saturday, while Luke was hard at work building our new house at Wild Finca, the boys decided it was a fancy dress kind of day. So we set off on an adventure around “The Loop” - our special 3km route from the doorstep and back again - dressed as a knight (Ro), a water god (Alby), and a princess (me, Katie). 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗹 – 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀. There was rock climbing, dragon fighting, and of course, “April Showers” (does anyone else play this game? If so, you’ll understand why we’re still picking grass seeds out of our clothes!). We gathered butterfly-wing treasures, heard click beetles, listened to a very chatty flock of sheep, and picked juicy plums - saving four for the hardworking house-builder we call Daddy. Alby even instigated some litter picking - a true god at work! The walk was full of nature’s signs: heart-shaped blossoms, bugs under rocks, perfectly placed sticks. We even ended with a little wild rose tasting (yes, all roses are edible - just make sure they’re clean and unsprayed).
🌿 Nightjars & Night MagicSunday night brought something truly special: Luke joined Chris Packham for a LIVE Nightjar Spectacular. If you’ve never heard of a Nightjar, they’re quirky and wonderful birds - with bizarre calls, strange habits, and a real air of mystery. While Chris’ birds were a little shy due to the weather, our Wild Finca nightjars turned up in full force - three males, wing-clapping and calling! If you'd like you can catch up on that session here: Ro was a bit sad to miss out, so Luke promised to take him too. On Monday night, they ventured out - 2.5 hours past bedtime (yes, we’re definitely feeling that now!). But it was worth it: three foxes, a chorus of night sounds, and then... a Nightjar singing from the very tree Ro stood under. Hello Reader,We hope this finds you well, and enjoying the Spring. At Wild Finca it is turning into a good one. A pair of Swallows have already fledged their first brood, RB Shrikes are calling from the tops of trees, lets hope they stay this year, and last week we had a very rare visitor…This newsletter will be more like a blog, so excuse the length…A couple of weeks ago Roan was asking Luke about vultures, specifically the Black, or Cinereous Vulture. Luke dug out some bird books and showed...
Dear Reader,Spring is our favourite time of the year at Wild Finca, and none more so than THIS spring! It has been a long winter, rain, mega storms and a never ending stressful house build. So the arrival of spring migrants like our Swallows, serenading us from the electricity wire, the fly-bys from the Egyptian Vultures, and now the blooming orchids across the land make it all the more amazing, and remind us how lucky we are, and why we live here!Recently, I (Luke) gave a lecture to...
Dear Reader, We now have four Swallows singing from our electricity line, chasing each other through the air. The Grasshopper Warblers surround us, and the spring flowers are in full bloom — a Giant Orchid on the loop, Wild Garlic down by the river, and Primroses gracing every grassy patch they can put roots down in. There are Cuckoo flowers in abundance too, but we are yet to hear one… I (Katie) had a very strange dream that I had heard a Cuckoo, only to realise it was someone playing a...
